• A Look Inside HP’s POD Container

    hp-pod-open.jpgHP today became the latest hardware vendor to launch a data center container product, the Performance Optimized Data Center (POD), which is housed in both 20-foot and 40-foot long shipping containers. HP is targeting the unit as a transitional data center solution for companies that need to quickly expand their operations. The company says the POD can support power loads of up to 1,800 watts per square foot (27 kW per rack). The product will be available sometime in the third quarter of this year. Here’s a closer look inside the HP POD and some of its features.

    The POD will be able to accommodate up to 22 racks, which are
    slightly taller than normal 19-inch racks (50U vs 42U).

How many kwh/mwh is it, any idea? I like these pod concepts that are coming to market although some are too ‘closed system’ for my tastes.

Sun had a similar shipping container full of its gear last year. It’s a great way to move large amounts of product by having packaged like fast food - eat it out of the box.

The cons of this aren’t obvious yet until you decide to upgrade. With a data center, you can replace everything including the racks with something else… here, you’re still working with a cargo container.
