CDN Roundup: Akamai, Panther Express, Itiva
There was a flurry of news yesterday in the content delivery network (CDN) sector. Here's a roundup of the coverage.
- Akamai Technologies (AKAM) has launched Games on the Edge, a proof-of-concept portal designed to feature gaming content from leading game publishers and developers, and showcase Akamai's solutions for accelerating game delivery and creating a high-quality online gaming experience. Gotta admit, the "Hellgate: London" trailer rocks.
- Panther Express said it has raised $15.75 million in funding from new investor Index Ventures, and existing investors Gold Hill Capital and Greylock Partners. The company said it would use the new funding to money to grow internationally and invest more in its network infrastructure.
- Itiva Networks announced said the company's hybrid CDN solution was used by Turner Sports New Media, NASCAR and SportVision to deliver TrackPass RaceView for the 50th Daytona 500. The race was the first of 36 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races Itiva will power for NASCAR.COM in 2008.
- Dan Rayburn at The Business of Video has more information from his survey on CDN pricing and trends, which now has more than 1,000 participants. About 61 percent of respondents said they had a 12 month contract with their CDN, compared to only 12.9 percent with a two-year deal. Also, about two-thirds of participants said they use just one CDN provider, while 10 percent used three or more.
