$300 Million Data Center for Iceland

Iceland's efforts to establish itself as a hub for green data centers has brought its first major project, as Verne Holdings has announced plans for a $306 million data center near Keflavík International Airport, the country's main airport. Verne Holdings, a joint venture by General Catalyst and Novator, said yesterday that it had signed agreements with National Energy Company Landsvirkjun, Farice and Keflavík Airport Development Corporation (KADECO) to secure power, fiber, land and facility for the data center.

The facility is scheduled to open for business in 2009 and create about 100 jobs. Björgólfur Björgólfsson of Verne Holdings cited the growing awareness of climate change as a motivation to locate data centers in Iceland. Economic development officials of the island nation have been touting Iceland's vast supply of geothermal energy as an advantage for data center operators. There have been reports that Microsoft and Cisco had scouted locations in Iceland, but the most notable success thus far has been an innovative wind-cooled project from Data Islandia.
