Switch and Data (SDXC) has opened additional space in its data center in Vienna, Virginia, the company said today. The expansion project adds 22,000 square feet of additional capacity to Switch and Data's existing site at 7990 Science Applications Court (SAIC) to satisfy high demand for interconnection business. The addition is part of Switch and Data's plan to add 3,000 cabinets of capacity in 2008.

"We are investing in capacity in the important Northern Virginia market to help our customers evolve and accelerate their Internet services," said Ernie Sampera, Senior VP of Marketing at Switch and Data.

The SAIC complex is home to numerous technology companies, and 24 fiber providers have a presence in the site. The expansion space will be able to support more than 200 watts per square foot of power and cooling capacity. Switch and Data also offers its PAIX Internet exchange service in the Vienna site, which allows ISPs, telecom companies and enterprises to peer their IP traffic to enhance performance and reduce cost.

Switch and Data provides colocation and interconnection services in network-neutral data centers, operating 34 data center sites in the U.S. and Canada.
