Here’s a quick roundup of some recent news bites of interest to data center professionals:
- VeriSign said Thursday that CEO Bill Roper has resigned and been replaced by founder and chairman Jim Bidzos. Roper had overseen a refocusing of VeriSign’s operation that included the sale of its Kontiki CDN unit [1]. Some saw the prompt exit as a bit of a mystery [2], but Roper’s resignation was voluntary, Bidzos told analysts [3] Thursday on a conference call. “I don’t think it was fair to have him around while we were looking for a replacement, so he chose to leave.”
- Rackspace Hosting continues to announce service enhancements in preparation for its IPO [4]. Today Rackspace announced a full suite of hardware, software and professional services to help customers achieve Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance. The PCI Data Security Standard (DSS) is a set of security requirements developed by major credit card companies for businesses that accept, process or store credit card information.
- Brocade is stepping up the rhetoric in its rivalry with Cisco (CSCO) for next-generation switches to power a unified fabric in the data center. Greg Ferro [5] notes that in a recent call with analysts, Brocade “dismisses DCE (Data Center Ethernet) as a Cisco-trademarked term and expects it to be a proprietary implementation, not backwards-compatible either, meaning a fork-lift upgrade.” For background, see our item on blogfeuds around storage networking standards [6].
