Google App Engine, the company's new utility computing platform for developers, had several extended outages yesterday. Here's the advisory from Google:

We've experienced several outages during the past 12 hours, the most recent of which started at 6:30am PDT and is still ongoing. During these outages, a significant percentage of requests resulted in errors. The errors are related to usage of the Datastore. We're working hard to determine the cause of these outages and will continue updating as we make progress.

Given the high-profile nature of the April launch of App Engine - which competes with Amazon Web Services - the outage was noted on TechCrunch and other blogs. Jesse Robbins at O'Reilly Radar used the outage to reinforce the importance of service monitoring dashboards that provide real-time reporting on uptime, such as those implemented by Salesforce.com and Amazon Web Services.
