• Gartner: Start Planning IT Cost-Cutting Now

    Gartner is advising IT organizations to commence cost-cutting measures, saying it is now inevitable that the slowdown in the U.S. economy will prompt corporate belt-tightening. The research firm says IT departments “can expect to receive mandates from senior executives to cut IT costs as part of an enterprisewide cost-cutting program.” An excerpt:

    “Last October we published research recommending that organizations should prepare two IT budgets for 2008, the first reflecting guidance already provided by senior decision makers and a second ‘backup’ budget assuming the need to cut costs in response to the arrival of a business slowdown,” said Ken McGee, vice-president and Gartner Fellow. “Since that time the factors we based the research on

    IT cost-cutting will only add to the already chaotic environment for IT staffs. Once again, “do more with less” will become the mantra of executive management to IT professionals (not really a big change from the original mantra of “Do more with the same”).

    To help alleviate the burden associated with some of the common, time-consuming manual processes associated with systems management, data centers will greatly benefit from an automated, probabilistic approach to managing complex applications as a way to help reduce IT costs without having to lose valuable IT staff. By essentially changing IT Systems Management methods from firefighting to preventative, significant dollars will be saved.
