Data Centers in Strange Places
Our recent story on data centers on cargo ships is only the latest “out of the box” idea about where to build and deploy data centers. We’ve written about a number of non-traditional data center locations this year, including data centers in the following places:
- Missile bunkers
- Former military communications sites
- Caves in Japan and Missouri, among other places.
- A former chapel
- Old shopping malls
- Siberia
- Servers in oil baths and fish tanks

Posted October 12th, 2010Swiss Fort Knox is another high security data storage facility located _in_ the swiss alps
The old Westlin Oil facility. Nuclear bomb shelter designed to withstand a 40 megaton blast. Could house 1500 people is now an expanding underground secure data center. I think it’s now called Montgomery Westland
David: We updated the progress of the Westlin/Montgomery Westland bunker earlier this year.
