Google Centers Use 50% Less Energy
Tony Ruscoe from Google Blogoscoped is live-blogging Google's European Press Day in Paris, including a presentation by Google Senior VP of Operations Urs Hölzle on environmental issues. Holzle says Google's use of evaporative cooling results in data centers that use "50% less energy than standard industry data centers." We've often noted that Google sees its data centers as a competitive advantage, but that's the first time I recall seeing a hard number from the company on its overall data center energy consumption vis-a-vis industry standards.
It's still a fuzzy metric, and I doubt Google is using half the energy of data centers from key competitors like Microsoft and Yahoo. But Holzle's comment is a reminder of Google's relentless focus on energy efficiency and the return it delivers on data center costs.

I've heard much higher numbers from inside sources, but cannot say.
