High Scalability, Low Latency

In my web roaming this week I came across a couple of sites that provide a high-low combo of useful information for data center professionals:

  • High Scalability is a new site put together by Todd Hoff with a goal to "bring together all the lore, art, science, practice, and experience of building scalable websites into one place." The site's links, articles and case studies of high-traffic sites provide a ton of useful information. "When it becomes clear you must grow your website or die, most people have no idea where to start," writes Hoff, whoa dds that building scalable web sites is "not a skill you learn in school or pick up from a magazine article on a plane flight home. Building scalable systems is a body of knowledge slowly built up over time from hard won experience and many failed battles. Hopefully this site will move you further and faster along the learning curve of success."
  • Low-Latency.com tracks the market for high performance computing (HPC) at Wall Street financial firms. The site was launched in January by the A-Team Group, and focuses on "news, thought leadership and resources on low latency applications, technologies and architectures." It looks like a good source for watching developments in the high-stakes world of algorithmic trading.
Also, if you have some time on your hands this weekend, The Register has podcast with Peter Rumsey of Rumsey Engineering, who talks extensively about the evolution of high-density computing and the ensuing cooling challenges. It's about an hour in length.
