Verizon Colo Theft in Denmark

The Dec. 6 break-in [1] at a Verizon Business data center in London wasn’t the only incident at a Verizon facility this month. Just three days earlier, on Dec. 3, there was a theft of equipment from a Verizon data center in Sydvestvej, Denmark. Sune Christesen of Data Center Map [2] spotted an account of the incident [3] in Danish news media, and Verizon Business has since confirmed the details.

“On December 3 a former collocation customer entered Verizon Business’ space in a Telia Data Center and removed equipment that formerly belonged to the customer but that had been seized by creditors in the customer’s liquidation proceedings,” said Edwart Lichtenauer, Executive Director International Communications for Verizon. “This unauthorized entry has been reported to, and is being investigated by, law enforcement. No services or data of Verizon Business’ customers were impacted by this event.”

While the incident was different in nature from the London theft – in which thieves impersonating policemen gained access to a secure data center and stole more than $4 million in equipment – Verizon said it took the incident seriously. “We are continuously reviewing and enhancing our security procedures,” said Lichtenauer.
