Ozzie: We’ll Keep Building Data Centers

Microsoft chief software architect Ray Ozzie, speaking at today’s Goldman Sachs Technology Investment Symposium in Las Vegas, said Microsoft will continue to build new data centers along the lines of the $550 million project it recently announced in San Antonio. An excerpt from MarketWatch:

In order to continue to seek advantage over Google in online services, Ozzie said that Microsoft will continue to invest in massive data centers. “There should be a recognition that demand exceeds supply with data centers, that’s why we need to keep building them,” Ozzie said.

Most of the headlines from the Goldman Sachs conference focused on Ozzie’s comments about Google, including the fact that Google’s advertising success constituted a “wake-up call” for Microsoft. That competition will only intensify, given Google’s recent announcements of massive data center projects in North Carolina and South Carolina.
