The Challenge of Security By Obscurity

We have a 184,000 square foot data center around here somewhere. We just won't say where.

The Arizona Republic has a curious story today, in which it writes about an area disaster recovery facility in Gilbert, Ariz. operated by First Technology Capital Inc. Sort of, anyway:

The Kentucky-based company operates a 184,000-square-foot disaster-recovery building in the town but won't publicly disclose its location over security concerns.

The article illustrates the difficulty faced by data center providers who seek to juggle corporate publicity and client secrecy. Gilbert's not tiny, but it's still pretty hard to hide a 184,000 square foot data center facility. And it's highly unusual to see a newspaper write about a local business and not disclose its location. I suppose they disclose the location to disaster recovery prospects. Not to worry - you can order a virtual tour on CD from the company's web site.
