This diagram, adapted from a patent application by Exaflop LLC, shows how a new cooling system design might work in a Google data center. We've added color to the original diagram to highlight the vertical standpipes (in blue) and air wands (in green) that would deliver cold air to components in the server trays.

This diagram, adapted from a patent application by Exaflop LLC, shows how a new cooling system design might work in a Google data center. We’ve added color to the original diagram to highlight the vertical standpipes (in blue) and air wands (in green) that would deliver cold air to components in the server trays. One standpipe supplies air to the trays in the top half of the rack, while the other feeds air to the bottom trays. The standpipes are fed by the cool air duct at the top of the diagram. See our story about Google’s cooling system for more details.
